Once upon a Bike Woman’s USA Moto Journey

Eva, a German rider with a thirst for adventure, embarked on a solo journey across America on her motorcycle. She shipped her bike across the Atlantic and set off on the east coast of Pennsylvania, ready to take on the open road. Her journey was not just about the places she visited, but about the experiences she had, the people she met, and the lessons she learned along the way. Throughout her journey, Eva visited many small towns, campgrounds, state parks, and big cities, sharing her experiences and proving that it is possible to travel on a shoestring budget. She camped under the stars, by the ocean, cooked her own meals, and marvelled at the natural beauty of America. From the rolling hills of Pennsylvania to the sun-kissed deserts of the West, then finishing in Florida

One of the most remarkable aspects of Eva’s journey was the kindness of strangers she encountered along the way. Fellow bikers, locals, and even strangers offered her help, advice, and hospitality, making her feel like she was never truly alone. Whether it was a mechanic fixing her bike, a local showing her around town, or a fellow rider offering her a place to stay, Eva’s journey was filled with moments of kindness and generosity.

She faced bad weather conditions, hazardous roads, and vehicle breakdowns, but she persevered, using her resourcefulness and determination to overcome each obstacle.  Learn more about Once upon a Bike.

You were born wild. Don’t let them tame you

As I recently sat down to coordinate my upcoming solo trip, I stumbled upon an inspiring message from Eva Strehier that has stuck with me: travel does not have to be expensive. It’s a notion that challenges the popular objections many of us have when it comes to exploring new destinations. Two of the most common concerns are the inability to find a travel partner and the misconception that one needs a substantial amount of money to travel. After reading Once upon a Bike, I knew otherwise.

Listed below are five tips I learned about solo travel on a budget:

  • Having some money set aside for emergencies is essential.
During her ride across America, the unexpected happens. She experiences a sudden illness and runs out of gas on the road, causing delays and frustration. A severe blizzard hits, making it impossible for her to reach several destinations on her carefully planned itinerary. To add to her troubles, she takes a fall while driving. These unforeseen circumstances force her to extend her stay in town, requiring her to search for new accommodation and handle the unexpected expense of a costly tow for her vehicle.
  • Find free activities to do.  Eva encountered numerous opportunities to discover and enjoy herself without incurring any costs. Welcoming locals frequently provided her with meals. She visited many landmarks such as Mount Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Memorial.
She participated in many activities, including car exhibitions, kayaking on tranquil waters, and touring Hollywood film sets. She relished the sounds of different bands during her journey. A particularly memorable moment of her travels was experiencing the Great American Solar Eclipse.
  • Finding budget-friendly places to stay can really elevate your travel experience. Packing a simple tent and sleeping bag can offer you a chance to connect with nature, giving you the flexibility to camp in a variety of stunning locations.
  • Listening to others peoples stories opens doors. The police find her camped out and let her go once they hear her story. By sharing her story and hearing their story, people opened up to her.  She found female bartenders to be very receptive to her story and knew the best low-budget places to eat or stay.

My Thoughts….

The book “Once Upon a Bike” has a wealth of information about important landmarks, small towns, restaurants, campgrounds and parks in the USA. People who own RV Campers, nature enthusiasts, motorcycle enthusiasts and road trippers will find many ideas to help them plan their  journey.

You are literally in the rider’s seat on the road with the author. There are lots of full colour photos of people she met during her 6 month journey across the USA. After reading her book, you will want to escape from the “Disney World Trail”, and other top tourist destinations, and see the breadth and depth of America’s people and the beauty of their land. This book inspires you to see how the real people live.  Eva’s journey across America is a testament to the power of the open road to transform and liberate us. Whether you’re a seasoned biker or just someone who loves adventure, Eva’s story is sure to inspire you to hit the road and explore the world.
