Whether you hate to shop for groceries or love to shop for groceries, it can be downright tempting to shop for all of the wrong foods when you’re trying to eat healthy. Instead of arriving to the grocery store frustrated and not knowing what to buy, plan ahead and make healthy decisions. Sure, me telling you to make healthy decisions might sound annoying because it’s common sense. It’s easier said than done, right? But planning ahead is really what it comes down to and a few other tips that I’m going to discuss with you below will also help you have the right frame of mind.
Shop the Perimeter of the Grocery Store
Most grocery stores are set up so that all of your healthy foods (i.e. whole grains, fruit, veggies, and meat) are on the outside perimeter of the super market. So if you get tempted to buy the sweets and junk – staying on the outside of your store will help you shop for only the good stuff that your body needs. Occasionally your whole grain breads and other healthy ingredients are in the aisles, but the majority of your healthy foods are on the outside. So stick to the outside and stock up on foods that give your body the nutritional value it needs.
Avoid Shopping When Hungry
We’ve all done it. Shopping when you’re hungry is a bad idea. You arrive to the store and absolutely everything looks good. But – this is not going to help you achieve your fitness goals or give you motivation to be on a healthy diet. So to solve this, make sure you’re not going to go shopping when you are hungry. Instead eat a meal prior or have a snack that will tide you over until meal time. If you’re super hungry all you’re going to do is buy twice as much food and most of it you don’t even need.
Look for Bright Colors
Bright colors usually mean that food is healthy. When it’s time to go to the grocery store keep your eyes open for bright colors and soon you’ll see apples, bananas, collard greens, and more. Not all healthy food is bright, but a majority of it is. Stock up on healthy food and you’ll lose weight and maintain a healthy figure.
So next time you run out of groceries keep these tips in mind. Of course self control plays a huge part in staying healthy, but setting goals and rules for you to stick with will certainly make the shopping process a lot easier.
